  Org. Setting and Reporting

  Established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) in 1958 as one of the UN's five regional commissions, ECA's mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. Made up of 54 member States, and playing a dual role as a regional arm of the UN and as a key component of the African institutional landscape, ECA is well positioned to make unique contributions to address the Continent's development challenges. The strategic objective of ECA is framed around delivering ideas and actions for an empowered, inclusive and transformed Africa in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063 of the African Union through its three core functions, namely, its function as a think tank, its convening function and its operational function.

  The internship position is located in the Human Resources Management Section (HRMS) within Division of Administration in the Economic Commission for Africa. ECA - Human Resources (ECA-HR) is mandated to develop and implement the Commission’s human resources strategy aligned to its Business strategy and the corporate objectives of the UN Secretariat. In doing so, ECA-HR undertakes initiatives towards talent management, staff learning and development, cordial staff-management relations, staff engagement, administration of benefits and entitlements, administration of justice etc. The function develops strategies and initiatives aimed at building a diverse workforce across the Commission and coordinates Commission-wide efforts to increase geographical and regional diversity across Sub-Regional Offices in Africa as well. It supports the Secretary-General's system-wide strategy on gender parity and promotes access to opportunities by persons with disabilities by undertaking targeted outreach campaigns to draw upon the broadest pool of candidates for Commission positions.

  One of ECA-HR’s key responsibilities is to ensure effective communication of its activities and initiatives to internal (staff members) and external stakeholders (primarily talent groups and individuals aspiring to be a part of the Commission). This communication is multifaceted and happens through different channels including through social media platforms.,

  The HRMS internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension to no longer than six months, depending on the needs of the department.

  The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the overall guidance of the Commission’s Chief Human Resources Officer and the direct supervision of the Human Resources Officer or any other officer designated by the Chief Human Resources Officer.


  Responsibilities

  The Human Resources Management Section (HRMS) is seeking a passionate young person who is an innovative doer and thinker and interested in making a difference for a better world. Within delegated authority, the HR/Communications intern may be responsible for one or more areas of the following duties:

  Human Resources

  -Assists with planning and organization of conferences and other outreach activities

  -Participates in planning and implementing special events organized by HRMS (information sessions, career development forums, university visits, etc.) as necessary.

  -Provides logistic support for the organization of public events, and briefings

  -Conducts internet research on thematic issues

  -Coordinates with special guests and VIPs

  -Oversees RSVP lists and volunteers

  -Maintains databases in line with requirements

  -Assists with development and implementation of surveys

  -Provides general office support (processing, drafting and finalizing correspondence and other communications; setting up and maintaining files/records, organizing meetings, etc.) -Takes on other special projects as assigned.

  Public Information/Communications

  -Drafts and schedules content for the the ECA’s HR information sections on the ECA intranet, ECA web portal and other Careers social media channels including Linked IN, ensuring that they are in alignment with approach and initiatives of the UN Secretariat’s Staffing Diversity and Outreach Section of the Office of Human Resources.

  -Identifies, researches, drafts and edits content (text, photos, documents and multimedia) for online publication (website and social media)

  -Manages engagement with the UN Careers audience on social media platforms; monitors and reports risks to supervisor.

  -Accompanies Outreach unit team members and supervisor to meetings.

  -Assists with live coverage at events that take place in the ECa HQ at Addis Ababa.

  -Assists with data visualization through graphs and maps.

  -Assists with drafting reports based on quantitative research and analysis.

  -Takes on other special projects as assigned.

  Graphic Design

  -Designs layout for the ECA-HR’s information sections on the ECA intranet, ECA web portal and other Careers social media channels. .

  -Helps to develop creative strategy.

  -Creates graphically engaging presentations and materials.

  -Presents visual concepts and ideas in a compelling and attractive manner.

  -Participates in organizing and setting up for special events organized by the various Units within ECA-HR (information sessions, career development forums, university visits, etc.) as necessary.

  -Assists with data visualization through graphs and maps.

  -Designs posters for outreach activities.

  -Edits images and videos for outreach activities.

  -Takes on other special projects as assigned.

  Video production

  -Coordinates video production and distribution of stories

  -Produces and edit video stories about human resources and management

  -Proposes TV/video stories about staff members and management

  -Produces and arranges video interviews with UN officials, specialists, etc.; selecting sound bites and visual elements

  -Researches, writes and edits scripts, storyboards and story synopses

  -Edits images and videos for in-reach and outreach activities

  -Takes on other special projects as assigned.

  Data Analysis

  -Assists in designing, planning and carrying out data collection for multiple projects (evaluation of the talent outreach programme and the intranet, web portal/ social media content, applications review, diversity in the UN…).

  -Assists in liaison with different UN Departments, agencies or member states.

  -Carries out statistical analyses with the most common packages (SPSS, STATA, R), using a variety of methods to analyze a wide array of variables.

  -Prepares a statistical overview reports based on the results of the analyses.

  -Takes on other special projects as assigned.

  On completion of the internship, the successful candidate will have gained:

  -An excellent understanding of the Economic Commission for Africa , its structure and its ongoing human resources management reform;

  -Valuable experience in human resources;

  -Knowledge of the challenges of human resources management in a multicultural environment and in an inter-governmental organization;

  -An understanding of staff selection and other HR processes, especially recruitment and outreach strategies;

  -Drafting and writing skills for public information and communications in an international context;

  -Extensive exposure to managers and staff members of the Economic Commission for Africa and the UN System.


  Competencies

  Education

  To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  1. Applicants at the time of application must meet one of the following requirements:

  a)Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

  b)Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent) in journalism, communications, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, human resources or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

  c)Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in a and b above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;

  d)If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in journalism, communications, media studies, filmmaking, international relations, human resources or related field (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

  2.Be computer literate in standard word processing and software applications such as

  Microsoft Word and Excel or similar; Be proficient in standard office automation equipment scanner, printer, etc.).

  3.Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter.

  4.Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.


  Work Experience

  Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Programme.


  Languages

  English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this position fluency in English is required, knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
